About the Opportunity
This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. FEU

The Transmission Prodecure Specialist is responsible for collaborating with appropriate personnel to author and revise Operating Procedures, Reference documents, Desk Guides and associated documentation in the Transmission System Operations department as well as other departments in the Transmission Division. The Transmission Procedure Specialist would be expected to utilize a standard authoring tool and guidelines to maintain standardized documents according to templates particular to specific departments within the Transmission organization. This position utilizes knowledge and skills in the areas of human factored technical writing, writing guide standards, controlled document repository maintenance, document revision workflow, and recognition of human performance error traps imbedded within procedures, and assessment of impacts created by document revisions. This position relies upon strong written and verbal communication skills, facilitation, problem solving, and customer service mind-set to help improve performance through the development and revision of human factored procedures and process documentation.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Utilizing knowledge of Human Factored Technical Writing best practices to author and revise Operating Procedures, Reference documents, Desk Guides and associated documentation
  • Applying Writer's Guide standards in writing and revising documents
  • Collaborating with and interviewing diverse audiences of knowledgeable personnel from within the field of the assignment (Transmission Division) to attain necessary information for documents being written
  • Interpreting technical input from Subject Matter Experts and audience to develop human factored instructions in documents being written
  • Analyzing content to determine applicable document type for Operating Procedures, Reference documents, Desk Guides and associated documentation
  • Performing assessments of the impact that proposed changes to a document in revision will have on the remainder of the document as well as any other associated documents that the document in revision is referenced in Collaborating with Subject Matter Experts to determine the right level of detail to write to support the least experienced qualified individual likely to be involved with relying upon the Operating Procedures, Reference documents, Desk Guides and associated documentation
  • Demonstrating professional demeanor in working with customers/stakeholders to answer questions and concerns about any documents produced before, during, and after meetings and events as a means of providing superior customer service
  • Working with Subject Matter Experts to test/validate processes or procedures according to the document produced to ensure that it works as intended
  • Resolving differences in professional opinion encountered when resolving comments in the review process of standard operating procedures
  • Managing document content in maintain a controlled document repository
  • Determining the appropriate revision workflow based upon the impact and extent of proposed changes to a document in revision
  • Making timely recommendations to effectively solve problems, using independent judgment consistent with standards,practices, policies, procedures, regulations, and/or law
  • Working as a member of a team or independently, either onsite with or offsite from the customers/stakeholders as required
  • Assisting in supervising/mentoring junior staff

Qualifications include:

  • Associate's degree in Business, English, Communication, Engineering Technology or related field or two (2) years of related experience is required. In lieu of degree, five (5) years of related experience is required.
  • Related experience will include experience in writing Operating Procedures, Reference documents, Desk Guides and associated documentation in a technical environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential; good written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and other programs. SAP experience is a plus
  • Ability to write clearly, accurately and concisely to effectively convey ideas in procedures, technical documents, educational material, reports, letters and memos
  • Ability to read and accurately interpret documents such as procedures, prints, technical manuals, company policies and other materials
  • Good organizational skills
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal skills to effectively communicate with customers and stakeholders
  • Demonstrate effective facilitation skills to guide decision-making or consensus
  • Ability to work with others to solve problems and follow through to meet established deadlines
  • Independently follow assignments through to completion
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Willingness to travel and the ability to work overtime and/or modified schedules when necessary
  • Must live or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance to the reporting location
